Overcoming Nonstop Thinking

Are you aware that your mind is always occupied with thoughts? Are you aware that thoughts constantly demand your attention, dictate your behavior and reactions?

cant-stop-thinking-cartoonDo you sometimes feel that your mind is going to explode from nonstop thinking? Can you focus your attention on what you are doing at any moment, or are you constantly distracted by all kinds of thoughts, negative thinking or negative expectations? You need to learn to overcome your nonstop thinking in order to gain control over your attention.

Do you sometimes wish your mind could just stop thinking for a little while, and let you enjoy some rest and peace? Like an engine, it has to rest to avoid wear and tear. It needs some rest from time to time, in order to recharge itself and your body.

The mind often looks like a cluttered room, with no free space and no place to move. When you empty your room it will look bigger and tidied, and it will be more pleasant to be there. So it is with your mind. Remove the clutter – the unnecessary thoughts, the worries and the fears, and your life would look happier and brighter.

You are probably not constantly aware of the restlessness of your mind, because this became a habit and you got accustomed to it, yet, thoughts keep coming and going, occupying your mind every moment of the day, spending up mental and emotional energy, and sometimes making your head ache.

Tension, strain and pressure at work and at home make the mind even more restless, and attract more thoughts into it. Problems, difficulties, fears, worries and hurt feelings increase even more the mental restlessness and lack of inner peace, making you more acutely aware of the swarm of thoughts coming into your mind and making you feel helpless. It is during such times that you desperately feel the need for inner peace and freedom endless thinking.

When you need to focus your attention, study or meditate, you are again confronted with thoughts that swarm into your mind, disturbing and distracting your attention. This also happens when you are worried, angry or emotionally excited. You feel unable to stop the flow of thoughts and emotions that prevent clear thinking, calmness or self-control.

During such times you just want to scream at the mind to stop thinking. You feel that your mind has broken any control and barriers, and that it is working on its own, sometimes to your detriment. It is like being helpless in a rudderless boat in the midst of the ocean, and all you want is some steady and safe land.

It is in times of worry, stress, fear and strain that inner peace of mind is greatly desired and appreciated. Actually, inner peace and freedom from restless and incessant thinking is a great boon anytime and everywhere. It makes you happier, stronger, more confident and happy.

Imagine how it would be to live your life, work, interact with people, read, watch TV, travel or do anything else, without thoughts and worries claiming your attention. Just think how your concentration would become stronger and your five senses sharper! Just imagine how your understanding, comprehension, awareness and intuition will increase!

You need mental and emotional training, in order to overcome nonstop thinking and free yourself the compulsion, and it is a compulsion, to think incessantly and involuntary, and fill your mind with thoughts that weaken you and distract your attention. You also need to develop some degree of inner detachment and mastery over your mind.

There are no short cuts to overcoming nonstop thinking and lack of inner peace. The aim is not to stunt your mind through hypnosis or subliminal programming, but to gain real inner peace, which you can enjoy while staying active, pursuing your goals, and while handling more efficiently and peacefully your daily affairs of life.

Everything worth having requires work and effort. You cannot become a pilot, an Olympic champion or an engineer by listening to a CD, hypnotizing yourself or saying some magic words. Developing inner abilities, such as calming down your mind, is no different.

Here are a few simple things that can help you:

  • Reduce the amount of time you read the newspapers or watch the news on TV.
  • Stay away from negative conversations and from negative people.
  • Don’t hold grudges. Learn to forget and forgive. Nurturing ill feelings and grievances hurts you and causes lack of sleep.
  • Don’t be jealous of others. Being jealous means that you have low self-esteem and consider yourself inferior to others. Jealousy and low self-esteem, often lead to lack of inner peace.
  • Accept what cannot be changed. This saves a lot of time, energy and worries.
  • Every day we face numerous inconveniences, irritations and situations that are beyond our control. If we can change them, that’s fine, but this is not always possible. We must learn to put up with such things and accept them cheerfully.
  • Learn to be more patient and tolerant with people and events.
  • Don’t take everything too personally. Some emotional and mental detachment is desirable. Try to view your life and other people with a little detachment and less involvement. Detachment is not indifference, lack of interest or coldness. It is the ability to think and judge impartially and logically. Don’t worry if again and again you fail to manifest detachment. Just keep trying.
  • Let bygones be gone. Forget the past and concentrate on the present moment. There is no need to evoke unpleasant memories and immerse yourself in them.
  • Practice some concentration exercises. This will help you to reject unpleasant thoughts and worries that steal away your peace of mind.
  • Learn to practice meditation. Even a few minutes a day will make a change in your life.

Inner peace ultimately leads to external peace. By creating peace in our inner world, we bring it into the external world, affecting other people too.

Your True Self

What is your true self? In everyday life, we tend to be different people in different situations. We can be corporate at work, relaxed with our friends, formal with our family , firm with our kids. We wear many different hats. So who are you? What is your purpose? What is your mission on life? Have you wondered what makes you special out of billions on people on this planet? Are you just an ant in a colony following the leader? Why do you go to work? Why do you have friends? Why do you live in a house? Why do you drive a car? Have you stopped and wondered? Have you stopped and thought about what life should be like? Or have you just followed blindly?

true selfDoes society dictate who you are and how you should live your life? Is it progressive to have a job? What is society ? Are you here to live and die and nothing really happens in that lifetime. Are you here just to live, eat and just drift along for the best part of seventy years. Are you truly happy? By happiness I don’t mean fleeting moments at the weekend or when you are in the company of a loved one but I mean when you are on your own, day in, day out. A place of contentment where external events have very little impact on your equilibrium. Is that contentment generated by an internal source? Can you be happy just being?

Do you think you have a purpose? What would happen if you actually stopped occupying yourself with the mundane tasks of your life and thought about what your true nature?

Have you thought about your soul mission, your divine purpose? Are you letting the life waste away? Do you have the courage to say enough? I choose to live a different life, I choose to be an individual, I choose to denounce society and follow my own rules.

I know some of you reading this will be up in arms at this point! This woman is living in cuckoo land but I am or are you? I understand life has been structured around society and we need money, for shelter, to feed ourselves, cloth ourselves etc. What I am saying is to denounce society is to use the current structure of what has been laid out to achieve what you want rather than the other way round. To take back control, I don’t think it’s feasible to go back to caveman days and live off the land but I am saying is to go back to making your decisions. You make think you do, but how many of us get influenced by our peers and by the media?

The media and big corporations know how to manipulate the masses so that we tied up in situations for the rest of our lives. For the current structure of society to work , they need workers. They need people like you and me to willingly to go into a four walled office and sit there for 8 hours a day without complaining because that enables us to buy the big screen tv, the ipad , a Mercedes , or whatever we think will make our lives easier. What is happening in reality is slowly we are getting ourselves trapped, trapped in a situation where we loose our true selves , where we forget pleasure, spontaneity , being who you are . In order to feed what we think we require for a happy life we dilute our true essence.

This blog isn’t for the people who are happy in their current situations, who I am to tell people how to live but it’s more aimed at people who think these thoughts but get beaten down by others. I have had these thoughts since a very young age and was told to snap out it and to “live in the real world” but what is the real world? Isn’t the world what we create in our heads? Is isn’t it all about perception?

I believe that we have all come to earth to achieve and learn certain lessons. All of us are on a certain rug of a spiritual ladder. Depending where you are on this ladder you will look at life differently. Some people will go through this incarnation never considering the questions mentioned above , never having the awareness. However what concerns me is the minority that do question and do have an awareness. They get caught up and lost and if they were happy doing that then this blog isn’t for them either. However drawing from personal experience I know what happens when you deny your true self, happiness becomes a distant friend only visiting once in a while.

I wish I had a courage to follow my feelings when I was younger and take more of a spiritual path but also understand that I had to get lost in illusion (Maya) in order to seek the truth. Now that I have the awareness of the bigger picture, I still find it hard to live up to my true potential. As you go through life , you pick up attachments. Attachments to friends to family, some of them who may not be fully up to speed on these matters as you are. These attachments then serve to hold you back in realising your goals as they introduce threads of doubt and insecurity. I acknowledge that we are here to interact with fellow human beings and we have to sustain relationships in order to learn the lessons but to achieve enlightenment /Moksha we have to see beyond this and follow the path we were meant to follow not matter the consequences. This does not mean hurting people we love or being a loner who goes into the forest but just having the courage to stand up to your beliefs and explaining to your loved ones how you feel. If someone truly loves you , they will want you to be happy and if that happiness does not follow convention so be it. If someone is very against your plans than you can carry on loving them sending them your love and then carry on with your life purpose.

The greatest injustice you can inflict upon yourself is not be true to yourself. So who is you want to be, what is you want to achieve? What are you waiting for? Today is a good a place to start as any.

Contacting The Inner Spiritual Guide

meditationDo you ever wish you could have your own opinion about life… A fresh, personal perspective without the fears, ego, past hurts and future worries as part of the equation?

You can!

Contacting the spiritual guide within is a simple yet powerful meditation practice that I have created based on ancient Shamanic journeys, Vedic & Tantric rites and modern creative visualization techniques. This meditation has proven to be so powerful for my clients- I’d like to share it with all of you so that it might serve you the same way!

As in all meditation techniques: Find a quiet space and a quiet time to practice. Turn your cell phone off, let people around you know you’re taking some personal time, put on some comfy clothes and create space however you like- incense, candles, music, etc. can all help set the mood and charge the space.

The Guide Within

In this practice, we will be connecting to that part of ourselves that is beyond the attachments of the physical plane. Although we may not connect directly to the center of our true soul being, we can connect to the part of ourselves that is the translator for our current and eternal selves. The guide within is not an entity or being outside of who we are- indeed, it is more us than we think we are now. The guide within is our consciousness on the soul level rather than on the level of name and form (everyday life in this cycle). Connecting to this power not only gives us amazing insight- it also trains us up to live more from our true identity as eternal spiritual souls and less from ego and fear.

The Goal

The goal in this practice is simply to connect to the inner guide, and create a space where dialogue can happen. We will not be entering a full-blown trance, because we need our linear/rational brain to stay somewhat present so that we can ask questions and receive/remember answers that have to do with our eg-based lives. If you find you are going too deep in this practice and start losing consciousness ( in a good way haha!), falling asleep or start having a hard time making thoughts- simply shake or dance a bit where you sit/stand to bring yourself ‘back’ a bit. Ideally, we will connect, ask questions, receive guidance, return to normal waking consciousness and journal about the information we received- then promptly put it into action in our life!

The Practice

You may wish to begin with a prayer or affirmation. This is a great way to start a spiritual practice and not only gets you plugged in to the right headspace, but also brings sanctity, protection and blessings to you and your space. Spend the first few minutes of the practice simply breathing. Shake out any nerves or ticks. Make sure you feel solid where you sit. Survey your body, make sure you’re comfortable and return to just breathing. A sitting ‘lotus style’ posture is both relaxing, lung-opening and stabilizing. Once you feel that a deep relaxation has come, visualize a nine-step staircase flooded in light. Ascend slowly- one step at a time.

Feel yourself walking up the nine steps one after the other. With each step you feel lighter, warmer, more open and more blissful. As you reach the ninth step and step up to the landing- ensure you allow how the scene looks to be your own. Don’t judge or criticize… let the environment of everything you encounter be what it will and accept it as perfect. Now, wherever the stairs took you, connect to being in the same sitting posture in your meditation you are in with your physical body. Sit, breathe, see, be. Call forth in any way you choose that part of your being which knows all of your being. Call forth your inner guide- your soul. Allow a light to begin manifesting either at or above the crown of your head or in your heart center. Whichever happens is great as this is simply where you are most comfortable working. Don’t work with this practice in any other center of the body. See the light come out of you and manifest before you… let it be what it is… a person? an animal? a symbol? Allow and believe. Spend a few moments simply being in the presence of your perfected self- as though you are looking in the mirror. If you feel the urge to merge- do not do that until the third or fourth practice after information received has been implemented in your life with success. Once you feel connected- speak. Don’t lie, hide, or sugarcoat… take this opportunity to be brutally honest with yourself and allow your heart center to purge with the chance to open and vent. Ask a question, receive an answer. Again, do not second guess! What you hear is what you need to hear and it is perfect. If you feel you are receiving answers that are not in line with Divine law or proper spiritual conduct- end the session immediately and try again another day. Take as much time as you like asking, answering, discussing, seeing, receiving, experiencing and being. There is no hurry as there is no time on this plane.

Once you are ready to return…

Thank your perfected self and embrace or touch hands in some way to connect deeply. Watch your perfected self re-enter where it manifested from (head or heart areas of your own body as seen in meditation). Stand up and descend the stairs. Walk down slowly just as you came up. See yourself entering your life with a huge charge of light around you and a sense of peace and power in your heart. Once you get back… Slowly start moving and flexing the physical body, gently open your eyes and spend a few minutes just sitting and being. Journal about your experience as soon as is comfortable so you don’t forget anything. All symbols, feelings, etc. should be noted so that as you work this practice more often- you can find patterns and meaningful symbolism.

Peace & Blessings,
